Hypertension Primer: The Essentials of High Blood Pressure: Basic Science, Population Science, and Clinical Management By Joseph L Izzo, Domenic Sica, Henry R Black
Publisher: L W & W 2007 | 640 Pages | ISBN: 0781782058 | CHM | 23 MB

The primary goal of the Hypertension Primer remains the provision of the highest level of expert opinion to the greatest number of learners in a concise, information-dense format. The Primer provides the entire spectrum of “science-based” information in its comprehensive subject treatment, which spans the best available information from molecular science to clinical trials to therapeutic recommendations. The unique synthesis provided by our eminent contributors is the quintessential value of the Hypertension Primer. The editors wish to thank all of the distinguished contributors for their outstanding contributions and for their participation in the rigorous new peer review system that was employed. Secondary goals of the project remain the support for other educational programs sponsored by the Council for High Blood Pressure Research, most notably the Hypertension Summer School.
The 4th Edition of the Hypertension Primer embodies state-of-the-art knowledge in our field and remains a showcase for the individual efforts and contributions of the members of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association. In the 4th Edition, a greater number of international contributors are found, indicating the growing awareness of the Primer on a worldwide basis. Our AUTHGRP list continues to evolve, in part because of the untimely death of authors from prior editions, including our good friends and colleagues Lawrence Resnick and Ray Gifford, whom we miss greatly.
The editors’ responsibilities have changed from previous editions in order to conform to the expectations of the American Heart Association and the current publisher. The editors have attempted in all cases to respect the opinions of the individual contributors. They have also put forth their best efforts to achieve consensus among the several authors who wrote chapters on diverse aspects of a particular topic under the familiar “superheadings” of basic, population, and
clinical science. From past experience it is clear that this consistency has made the Primer such a highly effective educational tool. Great emphasis has been placed on the Clinical Science section of the 4th Edition in the hopes that the enormous amount of clinical expertise contained in this part of the book will directly improve clinical practice.
The 4th Edition would not have been possible without an unrestricted educational grant from Novartis Pharmaceuticals. We believe that the Primer embodies the aspects of cooperation and collaboration among not-for-profit, for-profit, and academic institutions and individual clinicians and scientists. Specific acknowledgments must include Ms. Nancy Lurker, Mr. Joseph McHale, and Mr. Kishane Davis of Novartis Pharmaceuticals and to Heather Goodell of the American Heart Association. As has been the case since the 1st edition, the work would not have been able to be completed were it not for the tireless efforts of Julie Kostyo, our external Project Manager. Finally, the editors also wish to thank our readers and to re-extend our long-standing invitation to provide any feedback that will make the Primer more accurate, “user-friendly,” and practically relevant. At the end, we remain dedicated to providing a meaningful scientific and practice-based foundation for anyone interested in the most important of all cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and renal risk factors: hypertension.
